Thrifty Thursday: Hats!

Today's Thrifty Thursday is dedicated to a few hats which were purchased and worn recently! Additionally, this post is dedicated to a special outing to celebrate Colleen's birthday. We visited Linde Lane, which we posted about a few months back.

Colleen picked up this lovely silk hat at Junkee Clothing Exchange in Reno for $8.  It's my favorite vintage shop in Reno.

I purchased mine for only $4 from the Laney College flea market in Oakland, CA.

It was such a great morning and the perfect opportunity to show off our new little treasures!

On the Eve of May Day

Tonight, we are going to a huge bonfire in celebration of the eve of May Day.  The lore behind the tradition gets murky and could lead to an uncomfortable conversation about religion; suffice it to say that on the final evening of April, bonfires are lit to burn away the last vestiges of bitter winter before spring is rung in the following day.  Tomorrow, if we were to follow Czech tradition, we would have to go kiss under a blooming tree.

I am really excited because May is one of my favorite months.  To start with, May Day is my favorite holiday to celebrate at nursery school.  Christmas and Easter are great for older children, but they come with complex backstories that are too much for the young child to grasp.  Halloween is fun for some but terrifies others.  Equinoxes and solstices celebrate the start of seasons which children love watching the changes of.  However, the start of the season does not necessarily coincide with what children associate with that season (it does not always snow before the 21st of December and it is often still summery in late September).

May Day is very obvious to children.  Spring weather is in full swing, the flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, and we should celebrate by being outside.  There is no tale to remember or lesson to learn; it is simply about enjoying what you experience.

The rest of May brings some of my favorite things:

The Prague Beer Festival!

Brunches on Patios

The birthdays of two of our nearest and dearest friends:
Lucy!

Matthew!

Afternoons in the Park

Field Trips with My Little Ones
May this year also means a weekend trip to Olomouc, Amy completing her Master's, and hopefully a few trips to the farmer's market.  We look forward to a busy month with plenty of blog posts.

Birthday Celebrations

First of all, my deepest apologies that it has been so long since I was able to make a post. I have been super busy with school. Turns out, when you sign up for graduate school, they actually want you to write that crazy long dissertation before they give you a degree :( So that is what my life has been consumed with the last few weeks. Good news: 26 pages down, 44 pages to go!

Fortunately, I was able to take a break a few weeks ago for some birthday celebrations. The world was gifted with my presence 27 years ago and I have been enjoying its wonders ever since. For the party, I went with some friends to my favorite bar in Prague Red Room. If you ever make it to Prague, it is a must see! Owned and operated  by some very talented musicians, it boasts live music almost every night of the week.

I was very lucky to have so many of my friends come down for a fun night of celebratory drinks!

When shopping for the perfect birthday dress, I had two requirements blue and sparkly. When H&M had this blue sequined number, I knew it was meant to be!

I had my birthday party the Saturday before my actual birthday (which was on a Monday). So for my actual birthday, a few of us got together to eat hot wings and burgers at the local Hooters. Hooters is by far the best place to get good hot wings in Prague--and I was in the mood for this spicy chicken sandwich. The restaurant truly did live up to its tagline of "delightfully tacky."

Yum!

I would like to say another big thank you to everyone who made it out to celebrate! I had such a great evening and it was really awesome to celebrate with so many lovely individuals.
