Hooray for the Internet!

This week has been a lot of phone calls, waiting, and wasting time on the internet.
My links are full of crafty inspiration!

It's been ages since I've put together a mish-mash of links!  Here are some of the things I've come across recently.  Enjoy!

Hooray for the Internet!

I'm starting off my links this week with something you may have already seen.  Even so, it's worth repeating if not just due to my love of hot air balloons.

Enjoy them all!

I love all of these, but I'm still really into yellow lately.  Also, the ruffled curtain is precious.

Hooray for the Internet!

My first two links today came up one after the other in my Google Reader last week and I was so amused by their positioning that I had to repeat it here, just how I saw them! I decided to run with the citrus theme and choose links involving citrus or citrus colors.  Enjoy! -Colleen

What I've Been Working On: Waldorf Dolls

Miniature Waldorf-Inspired Baby Dolls

Made from Recycled Material

Mini Waldorf dolls

I have not posted about a craft in a while because I have been working hard on patterns and techniques for a miniature Waldorf-inspired baby doll tutorial.  I wanted to post the tutorial as soon as possible but there are just so many steps that I will have to split it into two or three parts.  Nevertheless, I decided that since I've got all of these dolls lying around, I should post some pictures of what I've been up to lately.

Most Waldorf doll patterns for full-sized dolls require materials and tools that can be difficult to find like tube stocking fabric and doll-making needles.  To make these dolls, you need only a few materials that you probably have lying around the house.  The least common material is wool fleece, which can be found at most local yarn stores.

I've been making Waldorf dolls for about two years, though I have been interested in them much longer.  My biggest project was making a doll for each child in my preschool class last year (here is a photo).  I was taught by a friend and have been honing my techniques using pamphlets entirely in Czech which makes things pretty interesting.

In the coming weeks, I will post a tutorial, bit by bit.  I may even do a giveaway!

Maurice Sendak Memoriam on New York Times

Last week, I posted a new book that I want to read.  This week, it seems only appropriate to post another book I want to read.  As I'm sure many of you know, Maurice Sendak will no longer be around to fill our world with beautiful, if somewhat unsettling, children's books.  When I studied children's literature, I think we spent more time on Sendak than any other author.  My favorite was Outside Over There; I think it captured the feelings of responsibility, affection, and frustration children have towards their younger siblings.  Reading about Maurice Sendak, I have discovered another book that I desperately want to read, which I was much too old for at its time of publication.

Brundibar is based on a children's opera that was performed at Terezin Concentration Camp in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.  When we visited Terezin this winter, I was in awe of the way the prisoners spent so much time trying to create some semblance of a normal childhood for the youth of the camp.  The museum is full of the artwork of children.  I imagine this book and the story of children performing it at Terezin would be a gentle way to introduce children to the history of the Holocaust.

Though I may have ended on a sad note, I hope you've found something here to inspire or move you.

Hooray for the Internet!

Mid-spring and a lack of upcoming holidays means a significant slow-down in blogosphere but here are some of the things I came across this week.

Doily-Print Fabric  on How About Orange
This blogger, Jessica Jones, was a bit disappointed about how making doily prints on fabric with photo-sensitive dye turned out.  I love this faded result better than if it turned out to have perfect, crisp edges.  I want to do this myself!

Layered Skirt Tutorial on Dana Made It

Obviously this is a tutorial for a kid's skirt.  Nevertheless, it could be converted to an adult and I am not ashamed to wear ruffles or seersucker.

I like this one.  There's another one that's much less up-lifting. Follow the link at your own discretion.

I could live here.

Stenciled Watercolors on Grow Creative
As a teacher, I am four square against using stencils with young children--limiting the creative potential and all that.  However, as an adult, I can use stencils all I want!  And I would do this for making stationary or something.

Rainbow Connection on Handmade Charlotte
This image fills me with joy.
